The Island of Elba with its 224kmq is the third largest Island of Italy after Sardegna and Sicilia, and you can reach it in one hour from the port of Piombino. It's known for the beauty of her sandy beaches for her now high and sheer cliffs and then low sandy or rocky shores, and for the romantic view of the gulfs where the clear blue water just pleades you to go for a swim, a water sport, sailing, surfing or skin - diving.
The Island of Elba isn't beautiful only for the beaches and gulfs. If you want to spend a day away from the sea you can't miss a walk in the pinewood, a view of the lovely hills and mount Capanne that with it's 1019 meters is the highest of the Island and lets you oversee everything, the olive groves, or especialy a tour of the lovely, historical and typical little towns.
Even the cuisine will leave you astonished with it's various offers, from the tasty and tipical seafood, the vegetables grown the old farmers way, the world well known wines such as the Aleatico and the Moscato. If you like peace and quiet, a mild climate and you dream of the sea and a holiday surrounded by beautiful mediterranean nature, you have to go visit the Island of Elba. When you get there you will find that Elba offers you all kinds of adventures, from the discovery of the old mines to Napoleon's influence on the Island and it's culture, from churches and shrines to towers, castles and strongholds; from the walks though the little pathways with your pack on your shoulder, to the horserides through Elba's beautiful nature.
What to do in the evenings
Elba is the most fashionable Isle of Tuscany's archipelago, even more so in the summer when the lovely little towns seem to shine, Capoliveri (with it's restaurants and shops open till after midnight), Porto Azzurro ( with it's romantic promenade and it's tourists harbour offers you the opportunity of long walks and of doing some shopping), Marina di Campo and Portoferraio, where you can find discos, bars, pubs, piano bars, and every type of little shops.
Sport
Elba offers mostly water sports, such us sailing, surfing, skin- diving and the opportunity to learn them in the many schools of the Isle but you can also practice some tennis, golf and horseriding, or rent bicycles, boats and cars. |
